Attorney, father, and rapper don’t seem to be words that go together, but Peter Finch, aka daFinchi, is all three, and he’s damned good at all of them. And because music is our scene, we’ll try and persuade you to believe that his new single and video, ‘Go For Mine’, are fine examples of his rapping talents.
Denizen of Bridgeport, Connecticut, daFinchi is a gifted wordsmith in his day job, so it makes sense that he’s a gifted lyricist as well, spitting out the finest bars, delivered with spite and might, letting his bars speak the words that mean the most to him. ‘Go For Mine’ serves as an autobiographical take, as with many raps, and he explains in rhyme, over a backing instrumental of synths and driving percussive beats, how law school and the determination he needed to get through, gave him a great foundation for the grind he needed for creating raps. Suffering is something felt by all of us, but not everyone puts their whole self into conquering it.
While ‘Go For Mine’ has clear nods to Ye, as well as Post Malone, it’s testament to daFinchi’s skills that he is able to create a track that is in his own style and which tells his own distinctive story.
The music video for ‘Go For Mine’ sees daFinchi charming the viewer with self-deprecating humour (this after all is the man who, on his website, refers to himself as “king of the burbs”), and he also allows us to see a glimpse of his life – he’s dressed in a custom suit flashing his watch, and next scene he’s splashing the cash. We see him spending time with his daughter and posing for magazine covers. He’s a man who has it all – from the framed degrees and plaques on his office wall, to the loving home life – and he’s not afraid to show it off. And why not, he’s earned it.
