The music business, despite putting out millions of tracks every year, is a close-knit community, where everyone knows everyone – or at least everyone knows someone who knows everyone else. Connections are everything, and while Smith, Lyle & Moore were all independently working in the music business, it’s through their connections that they have come together and made some of their best work.
‘Vampire’, from their upcoming album, is the new single from Smith, Lyle & Moore. Tyler Lyle (best known as the frontman of LA synth band, The Midnight), and producer Andrew Smith first met more than a decade ago, and started writing together. Meanwhile, Jack Moore was living in England, wanting to start his own music career, out of the shadow of his father, Irish rocker Gary Moore. He was convinced by his childhood friend, Dhani Harrison (son of George), to make the move to LA, which he did in 2011. It was in Harrison’s Santa Monica studio where he met Smith, and sometime afterwards, the three artists came together to form Smith, Lyle & Moore – it was only natural. Also naturally, as a close friend of the group, Harrison has featured frequently on Smith, Lyle & Moore tracks, including their July single, ‘Glimmer’, and latest track, ‘Vampire’.
There is a distinct southern California vibe to ‘Vampire’; whether this is intentional or merely coincidental, is unsure, but it’s definitely there. Listen and tell me I’m wrong. Pop your headphones on, jack the sound up to 11, and close your eyes. Keyboard rhythms sweep across, growing louder, then joined by the vocals, and then strident percussive beats. The strong electronic rhythms ensure the instrumentals could stand alone apart from Moore’s soft yet sweet vocals. Just as in ‘Glimmer’, Harrison provides backing vocals, both serving as a gorgeous counterpoint to the sweeping sounds of the instruments. There’s an Avicii-like element to the track, and one can imagine what ‘Vampire’ would sound like as a slightly sped up dance remix.
‘Vampire’ is out now, and comes ahead of Smith, Lyle & Moore’s new album, set for release on October 28.
