The past is vitally important to hip hop artist Deige, and he takes a retrospective look in his latest single, ‘Letter To My Past’, examining all that he’s learned from his previous experiences.
Coming from a family where rap and hip hop were pretty much in his blood – his uncle and cousin are already established hip hop artists – Deige has always had the encouragement to follow in the genre, but as an introvert, he never really thought of himself as much of a singer; instead he turned his creative soul towards poetry. Eventually he was brave enough to share his private voice and feelings with the world, and after putting them to a beat, he opened himself up to others. Releasing his debut single, ‘Hasta Luego’, in 2019, Deige started taking his gift seriously, and with a relentless, heart-felt work ethic, he is pursuing his passion in order to make his family proud – and to honour his late grandfather, who was his biggest fan.
Deige is much more than just a rapper; his music is fun, and upbeat, and yet they are filled with deep meaning, purpose, and emotion. He’s a well-rounded artist whose vision ensures he stays in close connection with his audience.
‘Letter To My Past’ is the perfect example of his passion. Written during a time when he was in a dark place in a relationship, which saw him constantly having to prove his love to an unappreciative partner, he came to the realisation that love doesn’t have to be proven by way of material things, and in the song we can hear him understanding that he needed to focus on himself: far from being toxic or selfish, one’s passions are a very necessary part of being human.
The first verse exemplifies this:
“I can’t settle for you baby. You’re not my only. I’m not toxic. I’m just waiting, baby.”
With a song that’s about writing a letter, what better way of portraying it than through a lyric video! In the clip, the words fill each page, organically revealing the letter and bringing it to life, while surrounded by photos and mementos of the relationship. It’s deeply personal and heartfelt, and this becomes even more apparent when you learn that all the Polaroids on display were taken by one of Deige’s closest friends.
