Philadephia’s Tommy Joyner is a producer and engineer, who also happens to run one of the foremost music venues in town, MilkBoy. There he’s hosted shows and recording sessions for the likes of Lana del Rey, Fun, Miley Cyrus, and James Taylor, to name a few. But today it’s the music of the man himself, and his band, PEP RALLY, whose new single, ‘Turn The Radio Up (Own The Night)’ is an awesome example of the talent of this man.
Naturally, for someone who puts so much care and effort into the work of others, that which he produces himself is polished, tuneful, sharply composed, and above all else, incredibly catchy. PEP RALLY make grown-up pop-rock of the very best sort; while intense, it’s also approachable, intelligent, and always very dance-able.
‘Turn The Radio Up (Own The Night)’ is the first single from PEP RALLY’s upcoming album, and it’s an anthem and a half, with its sleek vocals, gorgeous melody, and skilled use of synths, six-strings, and a compelling beat. It’s Joyner’s voice that brings the listener in however; he’s nothing if not flexible – one moment he sings as sweet as honey, the next he makes use of spoken word. All the while he’s clear and engaging, and everything a frontman should be.
For the music video to ‘Turn The Radio Up (Own The Night)’, Joyner plays the role of a guardian angel of sorts, encouraging his friends – impossibly endearing cheerleaders – to throw caution to the wind and express themselves fully. This is pretty much a role Joyner knows all too well, at MilkBoy it’s his job to make the dreams of young hopefuls come true. Joyner isn’t the focus of the clip, however; the real star is Philadelphia herself, captured in all her autumnal glory. The video both opens and closes with shots of the skyline, taken from a park, and we travel the streets, looking at Downtown from the Schuylkill River, it’s made abundantly clear that so far as Tommy Joyner is concerned, Philly is the place to be, and he’s happy to be our guide.
