Eucalyption – ‘Waiting’

One listen to Eucalyption’s single, ‘Waiting’, and you’re left in no doubt that Houston based brothers James and Ben Nissen grew up in a music-inflused household.

The pair formed their duo back in 2015, scratching that itch that had been in the backs of their minds forever. Their sound defies genre, with a core of rock, which is then fused with just about every other style – you can hear reggae grooves, funk and soul elements, and the occasional punk and hip-hop rhythm in their music. Eucalyption have evolved with every recording and each release is based around an experience in the lives of the Nissen brothers.

Eucalyption’s debut album, ‘Go Ahead And Ignore This If You Want’ is typical of their trailblazing; named after an art project by the same name of James’ wife, which was rejected by the art teacher, each song on the long player complements the next, reminding us to live mindfully and in solidarity. Through this album, Eucalyption is telling listeners to “go for it; you can do it.”

The music video for ‘Waiting’ takes us back to Eucalyption’s hometown of Baytown, Texas, in James’s 05 Chevy Astro Van. James and Ben reflect on their outlooks on life, as they drive around the all too familiar streets in their everyday van. Taken off of, Go Ahead and Ignore This If You Want,  They feel a bit lost, confused, and unsatisfied, the same as many others, who feel like they are drifting off course because of the uncertainty of Covid-19. They stay motivated however, and they stay going strong in the optimism of what the future will bring. The clip had started as a black and white jam session in the back of the van, and is now transformed into a colourful fractal with rainbows. James declares at the end, “I’m going to live like my life depends on it.” As the song fades out, we return to the monochrome journey as the van rushes on. We don’t know what the destination is, but it’s clear to tell Eucalyption has a long road ahead.
