Dan Says – Week Fourteen

I had the wonderful opportunity to catch ‘Club Tropicana’ at New Wimbledon Theatre from the lovely guys who run Club De Fromage at O2 Academy Islington on a Saturday night. Such a great club night, & there’s also a great little indie club within it (at like £7 extra) where they play Kate Bush, that’s if Steps or Britney aren’t your thing. Anyway ‘Club Tropicana’ was a lot of fun! It was camp, silly & balls of fun and as me & my pal Richard had started drinking…there was no excuse to stop & we ended up at G-A-Y with Miss Vanjie. It was a spontaneous night but GOD i felt it the next day; for sure. Somehow managed to muster the courage to get myself out to Hertford on a night out…lets just say…I enjoyed the cheesy chips and garlic mayo.

Saturday saw a welcome return to ‘Waitress’ at a private little intimate event where Katharine McPhee (eek!), David Hunter, Marisha Wallace & Laura Baldwin all sang tracks from the musical & opened up to a q&a. I, obviously, got right in there with quizzing her about future music endeavours which sadly…there doesn’t seem to be any at present but who knows what a few months in London will inspire.

Otherwise I’m really getting into ‘No Luck Nick’ on Netflix and giving ‘Lunatics’ a BIG thumbs down! Gimme your Netflix suggestions though in return for my top 5 played this week…

Carrie Underwood – ‘Southbound’

Carrie Underwood - Southbound (Official Audio)

‘Southbound’ was not particularly my fave track of Carrie’s record ‘Cry Pretty’ however I don’t know if it’s the sun we’ve been having but I’m hooked…mainly by the one line “those redneck margaritas are two for one at that old marina”. The track has that country-pop vibe to it and for some reason it just reminds me of Brighton…probably cause Brighton has a marina, it’s Southbound & there’s some great two for one cocktail bars there. Unrelated obv.

P!nk – ‘Hey Why (Miss You Sometime)’

P!nk - (Hey Why) Miss You Sometime (Official Audio)

It’s release week for P!nk’s latest album ‘Hurts 2B Human’ and my fave track from the record is the funky, pop-rock ‘Hey Why (Miss You Sometime)’. It has this insanely catchy autotuned hook “oh I need your love”. The track details a love that P!nk can’t get over even though she’s aware its no good for her “Titanic with your love” she remarks at one point when relaying the romance. We’ve all been there.

Taylor Swift – ‘ME!’ (feat. Brendan Urie)

Taylor Swift - ME! (feat. Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco) ft. Brendon Urie

Taylor has got to have dropped her most ridiculous single in years & I love it…‘Me!’ is super corny but super cute & effective. I mean the chorus is directly ripped off Emeli Sandé’s ‘Next To Me’ but whatever…the great thing about Taylor is how she’s constantly changing it up…and whilst we all want an album of 80s pop-esque tracks from her; instead she’s dropping tracks with “hey kids…spelling is fun” before spelling a bunch of words that feature the word ME in them. Genius. Corny. Perfect.

Aly & AJ – ‘Don’t Go Changing’

Aly & AJ - Don't Go Changing (Official Audio)

The gift that keeps giving is Aly & AJ. They are currently making the most perfect pop music. Its 80s inspired. Its deep and severely underrated and ‘Don’t Go Changing’ is no different. The track details staying true to yourself regardless of others opinion…especially romantically. The girls make a note of how people may change or alter themselves in a relationship & their saying not to.

Lewis Capaldi – ‘Someone You Loved’

Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved

Not going to lie, but Lewis Capaldi’s ‘Someone You Loved’ has possibly got to be my most played track this week. The heartbreak in his tone & lyrics…the delivery…the song is just everything I endorse in a great pop song. The stripped back piano tracks lends itself to Lewis’ vocals however there is an upbeat version they play on the radio that I’m also partial to.
