Melancholic indie music duo, Tuvaband – consisting Norwegian vocalist Tuva Hellum Marchhauser and British guitarist Simon Would released their new single, ‘Trees’ – taken from their yet-to-be-released EP ‘Mess’ – via Brilliance Records on 27 September 2017.
Talking to Essentially Pop, Tuvaband tells us the message behind trees, what to expect from ‘Mess’ and what’s next for the band.
EP: What is the message and inspiration behind your new single ‘Trees’?
We read an article about the environmental issues in different parts of the world so ‘Trees’ was born from the need to reflect these issues.
EP: Your new EP ‘Mess’ is due for release on 1 November 2017. Can you tell me a little bit about it?
The EP ‘Mess’ is more about people and society. When you’ve done a lot of thinking about yourself and your own issues but then you go out and discover that the world is just badly messed up as you are.
EP: Of all the songs on the EP which one is your personal favourite?
There are 5 songs on the EP and my personal favourite is a song called ‘Eventually Silence’. The message is more about an aftermath of trauma – when you’re in the midst of a trauma, you don’t notice what it’s doing to you but then when it’s suddenly silence where you realize
EP: How would you describe your sound?
Our sound is very raw. When we record we try not to cut out small mistakes. We also try to make it fun and not be too critical. Our sound consists of a lot of vocals and guitar.
EP: Would you say your sound had changed in any way since debut?
No, I don’t think it has changed much. Although there have been people that said our EP was pretty and cute, which is the worst thing to hear! So we have tried to toughen up our image a bit more, maybe try to toughen my singing as well!
EP: You are from Norway and your bandmate Simon is from Britain. Do you think this influences your music?
I don’t know! We both have qualities that the other doesn’t, but I don’t know if it has anything to do with him being British and me Norwegian, it’s more just about our personalities.
EP: What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Best piece of advice – It’s a bit cliché but make the music that you like. If people like it then great, and if not it’s okay.
EP: Is there any artist you’ve been listening to recently that would love to recommend?
Nilufer Yanya is someone I’m super obsessed with right now!
EP: What’s next for the band?
I hope the next EP will be released soon after ‘Mess’, it’s almost finished. Also touring and festivals!
