It’s an exciting couple of weeks ahead of award-winning Kelly Oliver, who has just gained her tenth BBC Radio 2 play for her forthcoming single ‘Rio’, which is set for release just ahead of the Olympics on 29th July.Kelly has been selected for a few prestigious festivals, including a performance at Secret Garden Party, on Sat July 23, which came about as a result of winning best female vocalist in the NMG Awards last year.
She’s also singing at Folk By The Oak, a one day music event at Hatfield House on the 24th, which sees the cream of the scene descend on the beautiful grounds. A week later she performs at Camp Bestival on the Friday 29th, then Standon Calling on Saturday and on Sunday evening 31st July, Kelly will be one of five acts handpicked for a coveted showcase slot at Cambridge Folk Festival. Festival goers will be treated to a developed sound as the usually solo artist will be joined by her band, Lukas Drinkwater on double bass and Niall Murphy on fiddle.
Since her debut EP launch in 2013, Kelly has been setting the acoustic folk world alight with her original songs accompanied by superb guitar playing and Hohner sponsored harmonicas.
For those who have not come across Kelly before, she is “fabulously gifted, something special”, according to Chris Hawkins at BBC 6 Music and is “a vital voice in British Folk” according to “Whispering” Bob Harris.
Following up her debut album ‘This Land’, for which she received a 4* review from The Telegraph, Kelly released her second album ‘Bedlam’ earlier this year, which gained a recommendation in The Sunday Times and 4* from R2 Magazine. “Blending traditional values with bold indie pop sensibility”, according to The Times, and “distinctive and breathtaking vocals”, from The Telegraph, Kelly is “an amazing songwriter”, says Mike Harding. Look out for Kelly’s next single ‘Rio’ which is set to be a summer hit with Thea Gilmore on backing vocals, coming out July 29th on Folkstock Records. You can enjoy the video here:
