Music Legend Carole King was last night named 2014 Person of the Year by Music iCares.

“King is being honored as the 2014 MusiCares Person of the Year in recognition of her extraordinary creative accomplishments as well as her significant charitable work, which has included an impressive range of philanthropic activities over the years. In addition to her continuously evolving musical career, King is actively involved with environmental organizations in support of forest wilderness preservation as well as a range of political causes.”
The Award is presented annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, who also distribute the Grammy Awards.
Previous winners have included Elton John, James Taylor, and Aretha Franklin.
King was accompanied on one song by Berklee College of Music student Ahmad El Haggar, who hails from Egypt. They performed ea Middle Eastern-style version of Carole’s “Home Again”, which was the pair collaborated on especially for the event.
Ms King was inspired by the MusiCares honour to invite El Haggar to write and perform the new arrangement with her at the event. She got in contact with him through Berklee’s President Roger Brown, who said,
“Carole wrote me to appeal for more scholarship support for Ahmad when the trouble in Egypt caused his family to suffer difficulties that threatened his ability to stay at Berklee.”
In turn, King said,
“I saw the MusiCares event as a perfect opportunity to introduce both Ahmad and the idea of multicultural musical collaboration to the music industry and the world.”

The event was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and included performances by Gloria Estefan, LeAnn Rimes, Alicia Keys, Martina McBride, Pink, Train, Will.i.am, Steven Tyler, Lady Gaga and Jason Mraz.
