Released on February 21, ‘All Over Again’ is the new single from Atlanta artist, Duane Hoover. The track is from Hoover’s upcoming album, ‘Wayward Path’, set for release on April 25.
Do you remember David Bowie’s album, ‘Pin Ups’, which saw him cover his favourite songs, and which gave an insight into what made him tick? Well, with ‘Wayward Path’, Duane Hoover does something pretty similar. Unapologetically obsessed with the sound of the 60s British Invasion, half the songs on the album are covers of the likes of The Kinks, Donovan, and Marianne Faithfull, while the rest are originals that have clearly been inspired by that sound. Heck, he even recorded it at Abbey Road studios.
While there’s no covers of actual Bowie songs, Hoover does include his own take on ‘Sorrow’, which Bowie featured ‘Pin Ups’. Initially by The McCoys, out of Indiana, and also recorded by The Merseybeats, he gives it his own spin, a far more punky version than the Bowie cover or the original.
‘All Over Again’, released on February 21, is the first taste of ‘Wayward Path’, and is just one highlight of many on this album. Harking back to the early sound of The Who and The Kinks, its jangly, intense guitars are backed by a persistent bass, and a steady drumbeat, all of which provide a stunningly nostalgic platform for Hoover’s sneering vocals. He’s drawl-y, almost whiney – but not unpleasantly so – definitely an homage to the style of the British Invasion, with which Hoover is most unapologetically obsessed.
While ‘All Over Again’ is incredibly retro, it’s not without its own modern sensibilities. While you can close your eyes and think that you could possibly be listening to ‘See Emily Play’, or ‘I Can’t Explain’. it’s somehow too crisp and clean to be a long lost track by The Who, for example. But that’s not a bad thing; it’s a welcome addition to the track’s timelessness.
