The world-famous cartoon characters, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, joined us in the real world on August 6 to watch a little bit of football, visiting Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to watch Hotspur take on Ukrainian team Shakhtar Donetsk (the former beating the latter, 5-1). This is one of several parts of a collaboration between the TMNT and Hotspur, who have partnered with Paramount to promote the iconic turtle quartet’s newest movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which debuted in cinemas last week, on the 2nd of August.
The concept behind the heroic group of turtles was conceived in late 1983, with comic book artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird taking elements and cliches in popular superhero comics and parodying them to create a new type of hero; a more comedic, laid-back cast of characters that were more relatable than classic superheroes. Named after Renaissance painters and given a Daredevil-esque backstory stating their creation through radiation exposure, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were born, and quickly became a hit franchise, spawning sequels, spin-offs, movies and cartoons for years to come. Even 40 years later, the franchise still resonates with millions of children around the globe, and Mutant Mayhem – their latest film – is set to be a worldwide success.
There’s nothing wrong with kicking back and relaxing from time to time – when the Turtles aren’t fighting the villainous Shredder, they like to do all kinds of fun stuff, including going on a concert tour in 1990 – a tour that the aforementioned Shredder crashed in on, trying to destroy all music (luckily, the Turtles won, otherwise I wouldn’t have this job). This partnership with Tottenham Hotspur is just one of their latest adventures in the real world – but even if you missed them at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, you can still see their adventures in the cartoon world, with the new movie in theatres now. The movie features an impressive cast of actors like John Cena, Ice Cube, Jackie Chan and Seth Rogen – the kind of cast you don’t want to miss out on.
