Okey Dokey – ‘Wine Friends’

Okey Dokey take a peek behind the celestial curtain to have a listen to what the music will be like in heaven. The Nashville indie pop-rock trio know it’s going to have to be something to make us feel at home as well, so there’ll have to be a catchy melody, and maybe a tiny bit wistful. With their new single, ‘Wine Friends’, they provide what may well be exactly what we hear…or maybe not. But in any case there’s a quirkily cool music video to go with it.

The clip, directed by Casey Pierce, is slightly unsettling, with lots of saturated, off key colours, and all three members of the band appearing, as spirit beings, dressed in tracksuits, their faces covered with cloths. They dance across beautiful scenes, and at one point, rise like spectres from their bodies, heavenward. We’re taken to the precipice between life and death, and with a retro-vibed song that’s going to echo through your head long after, they assure us it’s not such a bad place to be.

‘Wine Friends’ comes from Okey Dokey’s third album, ‘Once Upon One Time’, and the long player is as fun as the single. There’s a real early 70s sound to it, very much as if they’ve taken inspiration from Harry Nilsson, but maybe a bit of David Bowie as well.
