Chanique Rogers – ‘I Can’

Chanique is not your average triple threat. She’s got singing and songwriting under her belt, as well as stage acting. But she’s also a professional model, and a more than competent chef. Basically, Chanique can put her hand to anything and come up a winner, but it’s been from her very earliest days, growing up on the Caribbean island of St Vincent and The Grenadines, that she’s known she was meant to make her name in the world of music, and her latest single, ‘I Can’, is possibly the perfect example, a Chanique primer if you will, of what she can do.

Chanique has performed alongside the likes of the legend that is Alfa Anderson, of Chic. She’s done backing vocals for composer Aziza Miller, and classic rock violinist, Daisy Jopling. She’s been a Spotlight Artist on BETs 106 & Park, and appeared on ABCs The Chew. Although she’s had her setbacks – haven’t we all – it’s not quenched her indomitible spirit.

Chanique literally wrote ‘I Can’ in her sleep. She dreamed the song, and it was completely written 20 minutes after she woke up. But for all its quickness in being written, she took four years before she brought it to the studio, choosing instead to focus the song’s message of hope and strength on herself before she sent it into the world. An opportunity to work with Broadway singer and producer, Adrian Bailey, known for his work on Smokey Joe’s Cafe, and La Cage Aux Folles, among others, showed Chanique that the time had come to share the song. Listening to it, we know that she was right to release it now, a RnB gospel ballad, with a complex melody, it’s exactly the sort of thing we need to hear in these times.

You’ll be sure to recognise the faces in the clip, all of them have been gamechangers in their fields of endeavour, including Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, The Beatles, Michael Jordan, Sidney Poitier, Stephen Spielberg. But all have one thing in common – all faced rejection and despair, and could well have stopped before they’d even started, but instead, they all had that ‘I Can’ attitude. Inspirational!
