Former X Factor singer songwriter Lucy Spraggan, who rose to fame through her debut top 20 hit ‘Last Night’ to which she sang at her 2012 audition on X Factor, has since released 5 albums, with her debut in at number 7 and 2 just shy of the top 10. With over half a million engaged social media followers and a planned tour in Autumn this year, Lucy speaks to Laurabeth about her incredible fitness journey, upcoming new album, ‘Choices’ and planned tour and who would play her in a movie.
LB: Hi Lucy, thanks for joining me today. Let’s jump in and talk about the fact you’ve lost an amazing 3 stone! Wow! What workout did you choose and how did you make it part of your daily routine?
L: I’ve lost 3 stone over the past couple of years and quitting drinking has made a huge difference to my life. I stopped drinking and started doing fitness, which was quite a contrast. Initially I started running. After the third week, I ran my first 10k and ever since then I’ve been working on speed work, and also strength and conditioning- Olympic weight lifting. I feel full body strength work is import if you want to improve your running, you’ve got to be strong too.
LB: Self-care has taken on a new role of importance during the pandemic, with the lockdown making it a trend within social media. You’re currently going through a divorce, how has self-care become part of your new normal?
L: Even before lockdown it was my normal and why I’ve made the choices in my life. I started focusing on myself and my own journey, it was liberating.
LB: You’re also recording a new album in isolation in Scotland this summer, with a planned tour for Autumn. Tell me about the inspiration behind a couple of tracks from the new album…
L: There’s a song called run on there, believe it or not (laughs). A lot of the songs are about powering forward and being who you want to be. The beginning of the album goes over the breakdown of my relationship and getting back up on your feet. There’s also another song on the album called, ‘Sober’, which is does exactly what it says on the tin and covers my reasons for being sober. It’s very, very open and honest record.
LB: Your new album, ‘Choices’ is due to release October 16th, if you only had three words to describe it, what would they be?
It’s pretty fierce, honest and its different from my other music.
LB: And just for fun, if there was anyone to play you in a movie, who would it be?
L: Oh my god! I think it would have to be Dawn French- she’s funny and just a proper, lovely British woman. I love Vicar of Dibley, too and her book is great – the autobiography called, ‘Dear Fatty’.
Lucy’s new album ‘Choices’ is due for release 16.10.20 with a UK tour throughout the Autumn. Tickets and more information here.
