When I was in my 20s and considering a singing career, there was one artist whose vocals I dreamed of being able to match…but never stood a chance of doing. Lola Lennox, a singer in her 20s, is actually able to emulate those vocals quite well – she’s been given the genetic material to do so, as the daughter of Annie Lennox.
Lola Lennox released her debut single ‘In The Wild’ back in February, and without a doubt, the world has become a most unrecognisable place in those two short months. Lola has released her second track, ‘Pale’, on April 17, and hoped it would bring some comfort to those in the throes of grief and uncertainty. Although originally a song which examined Lola’s own personal battle with grief over the tragic loss of a loved one, ‘Pale’ takes on a whole other significance in light of COVID-19.
Speaking of the story behind the track Lola said,
“‘Pale’ was written about a time in my life where I lost someone I loved. I knew I would never see them again and processing the grief I felt had a profound impact on me. ‘Pale’ captures my sense of the world, whilst in mourning. Life itself lost its vibrancy – all the colours turned to grey. In these uncertain times, I hope this song will resonate with people who are going through loss; people who have lost a loved one – a job – or who are home alone. Anyone who’s struggling right now. I hope that it will bring a little light and comfort to all those who hear it.”
The track is a gorgeous showcase of Lola’s second to none vocals; pure, and silken, they meander through her feelings of loss with a gentle, warm but incredibly moving melody, flowing in perfect harmony. Although ‘Pale’ is undeniably sad, there’s also a sense of hope for better days. It’s bitter-sweet.
‘Pale’ was co-written by Andy Stochansky, and co-produced by Lola’s mother, the legendary Annie Lennox, along with Scott Salinas and Dan Muckala. The track can be streamed and downloaded here.
“Working with my Mum (Annie Lennox) was an incredibly special experience.” said Lola. “Together we focused on drawing out the emotional potency of the song. She understands me better than anyone, so it was easy for things to flow creatively. It was such a joy.”
As well as the release of ‘Pale’ Lola Lennox joined Annie Lennox, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, John Legend, Stevie Wonder and a host of global superstars taking part in the historic, first-of-its kind global broadcast event, ‘Global Citizen One World: Together At Home’, which took place on Saturday April 18, in support and celebration of essential workers and the World Health Organization (WHO). It provided a collective moment for the world to join together in the fight against the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. This was the first time that Annie & Lola performed together on a duet of Eurythmics Classic song ‘Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)’ – a song written by Annie Lennox/Dave Stewart in 1985. Lola appeared on the extended global broadcast across digital partners including; Alibaba, Amazon Prime Video, Apple, Facebook, Instagram, Joox, LiveXLive, Roku, Tencent, Tencent Music Entertainment Group, TIDAL, TuneIn, Twitch, Twitter, Yahoo and YouTube. The aim of the broadcast was to inspire unity among all people who are affected by COVID-19.
Annie and Lola’s performances from One World: #TogetherAtHome are now available on Spotify! All proceeds from streams will be donated in support of @GlblCtzn’s contribution to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund. Listen here.
