In the visual arts, “chiaroscuro” refers to strong contrasts between light and dark, particularly in drawing and painting, but also in photography. You can see it in the works of Caravaggio, da Vinci, and Michelangelo, just to name a few.
Scottish band Twin Atlantic have applied this effect to the video for their latest single, ‘Barcelona’, taken from their fourth album, ‘POWER’, which is set for release on January 24, through Virgin EMI.
When asked to discuss the themes and making of the video, lead singer Sam McTrusty said,
“When considering the concept, I was inspired by the unique visage shots in films like Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind as I felt that these would be the best way to portray the kaleidoscopic, vignette style writing I used for the lyrics. After an initial chat with Klass, I knew he understood the vision for the video instantly. I was blown away by the remote beauty of Kildare, Ireland, and it only added to the mystique.”
Speaking of the creation of the video, director Klaas Diersmann said,
“The song feels like an intimate story revealing the reality of a relationship. I envisioned the couple in a beautiful yet eerie landscape, which took us to the wilds of Ireland. This enabled us to contrast their emotional entrapment within their relationship and their memories with this almost other-worldly wide open space.”
In association with the album’s release, Twin Atlantic will be performing at a number of in-store dates across the UK, ahead of their headline tour, which commences on March 3, in Motherwell, Scotland.
