Earning her stripes touring as a backing vocalist for the likes of Rita Ora, Ella Eyre, Bebe Rexha and Martin Garrix rising singer/songwriter Natasha Marie Stewart, makes a beginning with her solo career with the release of debut single, ‘Speed Limit’, under the moniker NA•MA•STE. In conversation with her, she reveals the message behind the single, her influences, and the interesting story behind her stage name.
What is the inspiration/message behind ‘Speed Limit’?
Speed Limit is written about that feeling you get at the start of a new relationship where you feel invincible and no rules or boundaries apply to you. I guess for me, the songs message is simply to let go and have fun! We are all only on this planet for a short time, so you may as well enjoy it! If you like someone, tell them!!
Who would you say inspires you both professionally and on a personal level?
Professionally, I am inspired by hard working women in the industry! The women I have sang backing vocals for (Ella, Rita, Bebe) have all inspired me with their determination and work ethic! I am also a huge fan of Lady Gaga and her constant evolution within music. I think she is goals!!
My biggest inspiration on a personal level is my Nonna (grandmother). She was truly the strongest person I have ever met and any fire in my belly, is from her!
If listeners could take away one message from your music what would you want that to be?
It’s honest! Although my debut release ‘Speed Limit’ is a fun pop song, it is honest and reflective of what I felt at a time. As I release more music, I hope listeners can get a little insight into me within each song!
Your name NA•MA•STE resonates with me as an Indian! How did you come up with that name?
It was actually a friend of mine that suggested it. We were playing with different artist name ideas around my name (Natasha Marie Stewart). I told her my initials and boom, NA.MA.STE was born. It also tied in nicely as my great grandad was also Indian! He was from Punjab. So it’s a nice nod to family as well!
What’s been a major career highlight for you so far? What’s next for you?
I have been so fortunate in my time as a backing singer to have had unbelievable experiences with artists. I did backing vocals for Rita on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, toured around America with Ella on the Bastille Tour, the list goes on but truthfully, as cheesy as it sounds, one of my biggest career highlights, is finally releasing some of my own music!! It’s been such a journey to get here and I can’t wait to release more!
