Scott Gray – ‘Raincoats’

Scott Gray makes his home in Nashville Tennessee, but his jazz-pop songs emphasise narrative and echo New York voices, including the likes of Leonard Cohen, Laura Nyro, Billy Joel, and Norah Jones. He also draws from the older New York too, such as musical theatre, film soundtracks, and the smokey after-hours sound of the speakeasy.

Scott Gray’s track, ‘Raincoats’ comes with music video which evokes New York City in the early autumn, when the air is crisp and clear, the streets are abuzz with activity, and it feels overwhelmingly romantic. The song is part of ‘Raincoats & Other Short Stories’, an album which showcases his skills as a composer, arrnager, and lyricist, as well as his empathy. The six tracks are thoroughly catchy and melodically sophisticated songs, with ‘Raincoats’ telling the timeless tale of flirtation, seduction, and gratification deferred – but grounded in well thought out specifics, such as a Burberry coat, a Christian Dior dress, and the falling rain outside an apartment window. The track is filled with bouncy piano and high chimes, with a chorus bathed in brass.
