Inspired by the likes of Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliot, and Pharrell Williams, the music of Tia P. combines the essence of Eyrkah Badu, the funk of D’Angelo, the storytelling of Bahamadia, and the brashness of Jean Grae.
The Inglewood California native, and graduate of Howard University, is determined to be the Voice Of The New Generation, and has been making music and writing lyrics since she was only 6 years old. Now 23, she has opened for acts such as KRS-One and Bootsy Collins, as well as appearing in national commercials for Sprite, featuring Lebron James, Verizon iPhone 6 (featuring A-Trak) and Pepsi (featuring Tori Kelly). She’s also got a massive songbook behind her of more than 15oo songs.
Tia P. examines with humour the aim of reaching for the stars, illustrated in both the song and video as being ‘4 Seats From Beyoncé’. She raps about being up close at a Beyoncé gig, but wishing she could be up there performing:
“Cuz I got good seats
But it ain’t good enough to be
I’d rather be on stage with her.”
She is at the hair salon, where she’s literally four seats from Beyoncé, played by Donna Glytch. Later she sees Beyoncé again, when out to eat, and finally we see the pair collaborating, and walking towards and arena.
