Essentially Pop had the honour to talk with Nick Howe whom is busy with an upcoming EP release as well as traveling all over the globe spreading his stunning brand of music to the masses.  With features in the new ‘Angry Bird Seasons’ and ‘Comion’ documentary it is no wonder that word of his great songwriting is starting to catch fire.  In this interview he talks about all big things that has happened as of late.

EP: How has it been on the run up to your first official EP?

[space height=”10″]

NH: Its been a struggle, ha. It always takes time getting things to the point of release. I’ve been trying to do as much as possible to make it a success. Its great having a small but great team!

[space height=”10″]

EP: How would you describe your sound on this EP and what were your influences?

[space height=”10″]

NH: Indie/rock some people mention I remind them of Jason Mraz. I love a cross section of music from Jeff Buckley to Rage Against The Machine to the Raconteurs.

[space height=”10″]

EP: What’s it like to have one of your songs featured on one of the best selling apps of all time, Angry Birds Seasons?
[space height=”10″]

NH: It was very lucky to have a feature. Within the Birdlife Campaign, which campaigns to save the last birds on the island. The apps based on a real life crisis if you didn’t know. The charity campaigns to save the birds (‘The Angry Birds’) on the island.

EP: Did you write the song specifically for the Angry Birds app or was it something they just stumbled on and it fit?

[space height=”10″]

NH: It was a fit, the song’s a love story! or at least inspired by a few people that mean a lot to me.

[space height=”10″]

EP: You also have a track that is being featured in the new Comicon documentary.  How has that worked out?

[space height=”10″]

NH: Comicon was a good story, we did a busking gig there a few years ago in a Batman and Robin outfit and had an amazing response…30 Jedis dancing with lightsabers and a circle dance of excited superheroes, what more could you want!? A videographer ended up creating a cosplay video around my song and that same videographer invited me to get involved in his latest documentary, which was just shown at Comicon, ‘Comicon – Culture and Cons’ is the name. The first video off the EP features over 200 sci-fi, superheroes and cosplay characters. The video is coming out shortly, song name ‘Riches In Heaven’. You can hear a snippet here –

EP: You have played some great shows and had some great experiences so far in your musical career. What has been the major highlights of all the things that have happened with your music so far?
[space height=”10″]

NH: India has an incredible culture and I had a particular unique experience while I was out there at the age of 16. I was involved in helping to build a school and was living in very poor conditions.

[space height=”10″]

More unusually we did a gig at the top of the spire in Prague and recently, I enjoyed performing on the Eurostar to France! I love doing gigs in unconventional locations and look forward to doing an unconventional tour. My favourite performance venue is the Natural History Museum.

In addition to this being featured on ITV News for ‘Keeps Streets Live’ was a great if not nerve wracking moment.
[space height=”10″]

EP: It looks like you will also be busy touring this summer?  Tell us about the tour?

[space height=”10″]

NH: I just got back from Hong Kong which was amazing. Last month we went to Europe and I hope to venture across America in the next few months. Cultures are all so different and interesting. It’s nice to experience different audiences and connect with different people from different cultures.

[space height=”10″]

EP: What it’s like traveling to so many different countries?

[space height=”10″]

NH: I think there’s always a potential for tours to be super full on and completely exhausting. I like to experience the culture of places I tour in, so if you can, staying in the places you are visiting for a few days is positive. I like to try and make the most of it, whether its getting the people you meet to sign a canvas or a poster or whether its making sure you are able to hang out with people and learn.

[space height=”10″]

EP: What is your favourite song to play off the EP?

[space height=”10″]

NH: Probably ‘Riches in Heaven’. Its great when the audience gets involved and sings the anthem back!
