Another Lost Year’s Clinton Cunanan Talks To Essentially Pop

Another Lost Year 2

Ahead of the launch of their album, ‘Alien Architect’, Essentially Pop spoke to Another Lost Year’s lead singer and guitarist, Clinton Cunanan, and asked him to tell us the Another Lost Year story, plus give us some insight into how he thinks.

EP: What’s the Another Lost Year story? What’s behind that name and how did it come about? How did you come together as a band?

CC: Well I was in a chain gang with Adam, we were picking up cigarette butts and telling stories. It started just a couple of dudes jamming after my solo project turned band. Some players left along the way and we have the line up now that we have  now going on 1.5 years. Your brain remembers things in series of 3’s so it’s a 3 word phrase, ANOTHER LOST YEAR, starts with the letter A. All in all we love music. We want to see the industry become about that again. The love of music and sharing it with everyone.

EP: Is the band a democracy or is there one clear leader?

CC: We all make collective decisions. I have the final say, but we all seem to have the same idea. I never go in and say it’s my way or the highway, Limp Bizkit reference, but I will use my 51% vote if I ever have to. Haha!

EP: Describe your style of music.

CC: We’re rock. American Rock. Freedom Rock. You can be anything you want to be. We facilitate any mood you have. Our songs are about real life situations. The ones that we all love to hate and love at the same time. It’s like teenage angst without the teenager and the angst limiting. We can give you hope. Or we can tear you down. I write from the heart. Always.

EP: If you could do it all over again, what, if anything, would you do differently, and why?

CC: I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’ve made mistakes. They brought me where we are. And I have been committed to every decision we’ve made as a band. You have to evolve. We’ve been a band for just under 5 years. And we’ve done some crazy things in that time. We’re known for doing things our way. Right or wrong. It’s all perception.

EP: What three artists/bands should we look out for right now, and why?

CC: Well us, we have a new album dropping June 10! Cage9 because they’re badass and have a new album dropping in June as well. I’m pretty excited to see the Screaming At Demons dudes. It’s Shim from Sick Puppies new project. It’s good to see he’s back crushing it again.

EP: What’s your take on the current state of the music industry?

CC: It’s garbage. Money rules it. No one talks about it. Hopefully we can change our little corner of it. That’s why we started our own label imprint on EMP and eOne.

EP: Where do you see Another Lost Year in a year’s time? In 5? 10?

CC: Selling out Wembley. Is that the goal? Hopefully still doing what we do on a much larger scale. Still being true. On some red carpet events for the major motion picture soundtracks that we’re banging out. Hopefully all of us will have done well in our either passions because ALY paved the way for us. And positively impacting our society.

EP: What question do you wish someone would ask you in an interview, but nobody ever does?

CC: Breakfast or Dinner….. The age-old question.

Haha thanks for the time! ‘Alien Architect’ drops Jun 10!
