Space – ‘Strange World’

Picture 9

There are probably many among us who would think since having a major hit in 1996 with ‘Female of the Species’ and a couple of other well known singles that Space had disappeared into oblivion never to see the light of day again, but in fact nothing could be further from the truth.

Despite having gone through some particularly turbulent times and a brief split, their back catalogue includes four albums, and they are currently touring the UK promoting their new single ‘Strange World’. Another album is soon to follow.

Their style remains instantly recognisable as the song opens with a gentle beat and dissonant almost chant like sound. The guitar plucks its way in with an equally discordant twang. The vocal provided by Tommy Scott is both captivating and haunting with a bit of trumpet thrown in to enhance the mysterious vibes. All this adds up to something pretty distinctive and unique and leaves you feeling relaxed yet kind of spooked at the same time. Interesting!!

There are still a few dates left on the UK tour and going by reports so far it would be well worth getting out to see the guys as I imagine it would be one of those gigs you would leave pleasantly surprised.
