Merlis Camilo Bares Her Soul, In Raw Postpartum EP, ‘Ego y Amor’

Released last Friday, 1st of August, Dominican singer-songwriter, Merlis Camilo takes an in-depth look into her identity, and the emotion surrounding her postpartum experience in new EP, ‘Ego y Amor’.

‘Ego y Amor’ is available to stream and download here.

The five track Spanish-language release, transcends all barriers as Merlis Camilo explores her artistic re-emergence following childbirth. Songs such as the opener and title track convey the emotion and release she’s experienced, while powerful tracks such as ‘Dioses’, and ‘IDGAF’ are blunt and to the point. With overt honesty, Camilo pulls apart her own worth and vulnerability, examined through the lens of guilt, identity and societal expectations, so many of us feel as new mothers. While taking a deep dive into the darkest facets of love, with lyrics such as ,”Te ama quien queda cuando solo queda dolo” (The one who remains loves you when only pain remains), she decides to reflect the pain and instead turn it into joy: “Yo sigo siendo la misma / Soy la luz reflejada en el prisma” (I remain the same / I am the light reflected in the prism).

Camilo traverses the full gamut of her artistic abilities, giving listeners a range of genres, including indie, rock, ballad and even punk – we challenge you to resist singing the extraordinarily catchy refrain of ‘IDGAF’. While it’s clear that ‘Ego y Amor’ is deeply personal, it’s also something that many listeners will relate to and enjoy.

‘Ego y Amor’ follows on from Merlis Camilo’s previous studio albums, ‘Desnudar el alma’ (2016) and ‘Merlis Camilo’ (2019), and sees her continue to raise her profile as one of the most original voices in the Dominican indie music scene.
