Set for self-release on August 2, ‘Southern Soul Revival’ is the new album for Athens Georgia outfit, Heart Of Pine. Ahead of this they’ve dropped the freaky far out track, ‘Voodoo Leg Bone’, which serves as a great introduction to the band’s self-described “Southedelic” style.
Heart Of Pine was formed in 2015 by Steven Bagwell and Travis Richardson, after the pair had had a number of very productive songwriting sessions. Their sound takes into account inspiration from classic rock, blues, country, jam, Americana, and funk genres, and most definitely pays tribute to the likes of The Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, Waylon Jennings, The Band, Grateful Dead, Little Feat and Lynyrd Skynyrd – just to name a few.
New single, ‘Voodoo Leg Bone’ could easily be a newly discovered track from any of the above, and in fact, you could aim a pin at the entirety of the songs on ‘Southern Soul Revival’ and pick another that matches that description.
There’s a deep familiarity in Heart Of Pine’s sound, giving Steven Bagwell’s powerful voice and effortless vocal delivery the showcase it deserves, while he and Travis Richardson’s songwriting styles are the ideal complement for each other.
Heart Of Pine rounds out its roster with keyboard wizard Jesse Fountain, multi-instrumentalist Boone Hood, featuring on bass, and Todd Headley on drums, the latter a longtime Athens Georgia musical legend. While ‘Southern Soul Revival’ is only their second album, it’s a well-oiled, finely put together record, and brings with it the promise of much more to come.
