Ellie Dixon has been raising a bit of a storm on TikTok with over a million followers, which in the modern world of music consumption is a great gateway into people’s musical psyche. The 23-year-old from Cambridge has been creating her own brand of self-aware alt pop from her bedroom ‘studio’ playing and recording all of the instruments, layering her vocals and sampling anything else she can find around the house. Her musicality literally knows no bounds with saucepans and mugs being used, which might seem obvious, but also a box of SD cards, which takes a little more imagination. This enterprising artist even creates, produces and directs her own videos. She fuses indie pop, jazz, rap and R&B effortlessly as she uses witty lyrics and infectious earworms to express frustrations and life lessons through the medium of art.
It’s really no surprise then that Decca Records have snapped up this young artist and signed her to the label. In the last year, Ellie has taken the online world by storm creating regular viral content both with her own music and through harmonising with others, adding original rap verses and duets with ear catching sounds. This ingenuity has led to over a million TikTok followers hanging on her every release. Decca will consider themselves very astute to have signed this wunderkind.
During last year Ellie recorded a live Maida Vale session for Radio 1, she had a BBC introducing Track of the Week with ‘Green Grass’, she performed at Camp Bestival on the Big Top Stage, and headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Latitude Festival. She reached over 5.2 million Spotify streams across her catalogue, a number that many established recording artists would be more than happy with. This year she has already been nominated for ‘TikTok Songwriter of the Year’ at the iHeart Radio Awards and is about to tour with Casey Lowry, a slot she earned by answering his TikTok challenge to write a verse for one of his songs. She ended up writing a verse he felt was better than his and they will be on tour together.
She has a new EP called ‘Crikey! It’s My Psyche’ which is a fantasy deep dive into the brain of this outstanding young artist. Across the five tracks, Ellie manages to distil the essence of five distinct moods: detachment, desperation, joy, anxiety and relaxation. She further personifies each mood by giving them a voice, a face and an extravagant appearance. Together, they illustrate the fun oddities of being human, reminding the listener to be kind to themselves and find a sense of humour in the harder parts of life. Music as food for the soul.
So, with all this in mind, it’s really no surprise that she turned up to sign her deal with Decca in a space suit, which is a nod to EP opener ‘Space Out!’, and armed with a giant crayon to sign the contract. She is thrilled to be joining the roster at Decca records.
Ellie says:
“I am super excited to have signed with Decca Records! Thank you to everyone who has joined the journey so far-your support has made this happen. This all started out with me making beats on my parent’s computer, now I can’t wait to bring you new music, more madness, and share the journey with you all.”
Co-presidents of Decca Label Group, Laura Monks and Tom Lewis are equally enthusiastic about the relationship and say:
“Ellie Dixon is the epitome of self-built. A true next generation artist thinking outside the confines of the traditional music market. She does it all, from writing and recording to mixing her self-released EP and directing all her own visuals. Her success to date growing her global fan base in mere months speaks of her amazing talent, abundant creativity and engaging personality. We are extremely proud Ellie is joining the Decca family.”
