In an article just published on Music Week it has been revealed that dance music was amongst the most popular of genres to be streamed on Spotify, with its popularity peaking in May 2020. President Street were part of the craze.
Seems fair enough, really – we were all stuck indoors, we might as well party! But, bringing us party music with a message is the wonderful TIME IS UP, written by the Australian duo as a response to the various protest movements the world over – including #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter.
“Watching the news we were struck by the diversity of people coming together peacefully and so we wanted it to feel like a celebration of people of all colours, age, religions and gender coming together to say that we’ve all had enough, and the time for change is now.”
“Celebration” is the key word here – no despair or defeat, only the joy found in diversity and in protest itself. Something which is key to the spirit of dance music is to find joy in movement, to just dance away any negative energy. This is what we can see in the dance music trend of lockdown, and in President Street’s new song.
Time is Up is out now.
