We’re nearly at the end of our Essential Advent Calendar as we open door number 23 on what is arguably one of – if not THE – most famous Christmas songs in recent times (sorry Mariah!). If you’re playing #Whamageddon, you’re advised to turn away now.
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of one of the greatest Christmas songs of all time, Sony Music has released a strictly limited-edition replica of the original ‘Last Christmas’ single, on collectable white vinyl.
Originally released in December 1984 on a double A side with ‘Everything She Wants’, the single reached #2, beaten to the #1 spot by the Band Aid hit, ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’, on which George Michael also sang.
Along the way, with digital downloads included, Last Christmas has become the best-selling track to never reach the summit of the Official Singles Chart, has re-charted each year since 2007, and returned to its peak position in 2017. Over its 35 year lifespan the song’s popularity and appeal has broadened to many new generations of fans with countless cover versions by the likes of Taylor Swift, The XX, and Ariana Grande. The limited-edition vinyl release of ‘Last Christmas’ coincides with the recently released #1 box office hit film of the same name.
‘Last Christmas’ the movie is accompanied by an original motion picture soundtrack, which also features ‘Last Christmas’, plus two other fabulous Wham! songs, as well as 12 of George Michael’s best loved tracks from his solo years. As well as the limited run of the collectable 7” vinyl, fans can expect a restored official ‘Last Christmas’ video, which has been upgraded to 4k by the original director, Andy Morahan. How is ‘Last Christmas’ already 35 years old? A much loved Christmas song, that is loved by many, including myself. Every time it is on the radio, i always have to have a little sing along and dance along with it, it is a hit for many people in the festive season. You are always bound to hear the original song around and smiling along to it too!
