Dubbed as “The Queen Of Underground Soul” by her fans and critics alike, Sy Smith demonstrated on ‘Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concrete’ that she’s no one-trick pony.
Sy wrote and sang every song on the set, and produced them all as well. Her fierce independence allows her to take chances, and this boldness pays off. This remix by DTLA-Pico of her track, ‘Perspective’, featuring B. Slade, serves up a vintage remix feel, and comes close to outdoing the original, and is taken from ‘Sometimes A Rose Will Get A Remix’ project, released last year, which is a full-length record of reinterpretations of her 2018 breakthrough.
The ‘Remix’ album gives her progressive soul tracks to a slew of imaginative RnB and dance musicians, including Applejac, JSoul, B. Slade, and Modern Grove Assembly. Each in turn takes the tracks and finds new dimensions and textures in the already powerful tunes.
The ‘Perspective’ remix has been transformed from merely sultry to a full-flown dance floor burner. Sy leads us through the seductive verses, teasing us as we go, while B. Slade tempts us with his saucy vocals, then surprises with his rap swagger. B. Slade doesn’t just seduce us with his voice, but he’s also one of the directors of the clip, and has teamed up with Dance-Off director Alex DiMarco, showing Sy as she is, an untamed spirit of the LA streets, with the setting sun shining on her, shimmering in the golden hour.
