Aja Volkman is best known for being the female front for LA rock-trio, Nico Vega. She’s now announced her long anticipated solo debut, with her album, ‘Sandy’. Featuring the lead single, ‘My Man’, ‘Sandy’ will be available to download from 19 May.
Originally from Oregon, Aja Volkman’s musical talent was obvious from an early age, and her career blossomed when she joined forces with War Paint frontwoman Emily Kohal. She continued her foray into the music scene in 2004, by joining the successful LA rock-trio, Nico Vega, who released their first full length album in 2009, to critical acclaim. Billboard Magazine hailed it as “The most unstoppable pop-rock hooks heard all year.” The band continued to gain popularity from 2014-2015, when they landed a support slot for Imagine Dragons. This had a wonderful consequence, with Aja meeting her future husband, Imagine Dragons frontman, Dan Reynolds.
‘Sandy’ is a bluesy, soul-infused album, with a vintage sound, starting with the 50s feeling ‘My Man’. The sound continues the guitar-led ‘Bother Me’, and ‘Nobody’, the latter of which has an early Bob Dylan vibe about it. ‘Deep Love’ is all bluegrass and banjo, while 5th song, ‘Skeletons’, returns to the 50s sound. ‘Sandy’ was recorded in Utah with singer-songwriter Joshua James, and took over a year to put together.
‘Sandy’ is out May 19, with ‘My Man’ available instantly for free when pre-ordering.
