Milana May is an unconventional singer/songwriter/producer originally from Siberia, but now based in New York, where she studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film School. Described as “The Siberian Icebreaker”, Milana had an unusual upbringing, as the daughter of a classical music teacher and a Shaman, and was surrounded by music from an early age. This no doubt has had an influence on her sound, with her latest track, ‘Crazy Boy’, having a real esoteric, world music vibe to it.Â
‘Crazy Boy’ is a multi-layered jazz-infused track which showcases the innovative style of Milana, which blends different kinds of dance music with a shamanistic, mystical, and raw vibe. Her lyrics are also able to be interpreted on many different levels, and combine the lifestyle concerns of the modern day New Yorker with the esoteric symbolism of the folk mythology of her heritage.
The video for ‘Crazy Boy’ is set in New York City and tells the story of ups and downs of life with a “crazy boy”. Unusually for the city which never sleeps, there are never many more than just the two of them in this video – illustrating perfectly a love which excludes the rest of the 8 billion or so people in the world.
Soft muted colours echoing the lilting dance beats, world music style instrumentation, and harmonic vocals of Milana herself, the video and song combine to convey a feel good vibe of general happiness, and the idea that all is right with the world if only you are with the one you love.
