Last week we had Brendan Dreaper, sound engineer of Introflirt, giving us his Essential Weekly Playlist. This week, with a very eclectic mix, it’s the turn of Vafa Donorous, who is the synth player and live director for the band.
Sofia Reta – ‘Persius’
It was a toss up between this and “Fear Necklace.” The drums in this song are superb. Also it contains an insanely haunting and dark quality that I can’t get enough of. Plus, this person is insanely prolific, over 40 works in just a few years… can you pronounce “inspiration?”
Xeno & Oaklander – ‘Par Avion’
Love that synth bass. Her voice is fantastic. It’s all analog too.
CTI – ‘Dancing Ghosts’
Though her lyrics and voice are a strong point, this song is fine without. Super minimal and simple. No problem that that bass line just repeats, it’s great.
Skinny Puppy – ‘The Pit’
Here’s some grit. This is from the first release by Skinny Puppy. It’s pretty metallic. And nasty. So good.
Cocteau Twins – ‘The Hollow Men’
Kind of their wavy days before Simon Raymonde replaced Will Heggie on bass. The bass is good though. It’s pretty dark. Clearly I’m into darkness in my music.
Geneva Jacuzzi – ‘Nonsense Nonsense’
Groovin’ but still girlie and just enough mallet sounds.
The Knife – ‘Rock Classics’
I want to be in a cafe where they turn the techno up when it gets crowded…and drink coffee. The imagery!
LCD Soundsystem – ‘Yeah’ (Pretentious Version)
I dance the entirety of this one. Another lyric-less gem by a rather fantastic lyricist.
Helena Hauff – ‘Spur’
I can’t stop putting synth heavy dark bangers on this list. Here’s another badass lady pumping out a surefire hip mover.
Kavinski – ‘Night Call’
I don’t really want to say much about this other than uuuuuuggggghhhhhhhh.
