‘Sinner’ is the latest single for Oberon Rose, released last Friday, January 8, ahead of their new album, ‘Holographic Blues’, which comes out this Friday, the 15th.
Described by Aquarium Drunkard as,
“Psychedelic meets country meets retro glamour with a touch of the Dandy Warhols”,
and we couldn’t agree more. When we last wrote about Oberon Rose, with their single, ‘American Avenue‘, we felt like it was something that Fleetwood Mac could have released in their early days with the late Peter Green.
This time around they’ve gone full Rolling Stones, crossed with late era Beatles, and The Who. As someone who really enjoys that sound, it’s a big thumbs up from me.
Considering it’s come from an album called ‘Holographic Blues’, nobody should at all be surprised about hearing twangy surf-rock guitar, and close harmonies; still however it’s got the power to impress. It’s not really retro or derivative – it’s more closely akin to something that’s languished undiscovered for nearly 60 years.
Close your eyes and feel the song, from the opening bars, and continuing all the way through. I get visions of The Monkees, all holding onto the same surfboard, striding along in comical fashion, on a sun-drenched California beach.
The lyrics, however, are a bit more than merely fun in the sun, with Biblical allusions to The Ancient Of Days, the name for God in the Old Testament book of Daniel:
“Sinner gonna take you further than you want to go
Sinner gonna tell you more than you want to knowKeep you from the cold keep you from the rain water to flame
the Ancient Of DaysSinner gonna keep you longer than you wanna stay
Sinner gonna charge you more than you wanna payKeep you from the wind keep you from the pain water to flame
the Ancient Of Days”
The song is set up like an old-time evangelical chorus, with simple lyrics and a super catchy tune, as it cautions us against the sinner. We’re getting on board the gospel train with Oberon Rose, and fully prepared to follow wherever they lead!
