INTERVIEW: Allegra Talks Releasing Her Debut EP, Defining Her Style And Getting Over A Break-Up

Polly Havelock has an honest conversation with Allegra on her upcoming EP, ‘Unsent Love Letters Vol.1’, which hits the airwaves on September 27th.

Hey Allegra, how has your 2024 been so far?

Well, I’ve released two singles already and two videos which has just been incredible. And now I’m just happy to say that I am getting ready to release my first ever EP.

How did you originally get into music?

I’ve always been singing and dancing since I can remember my mother always said I was the theatrical kid in the family. I loved putting on shows for my parents and my aunt and uncle with my cousin, being in the school theatres and singing and I’ve just always had music around me. So I guess that’s kind of how I got into it and it all began from there.

What are you currently listening to?

I’m listening to a lot of Raye right now. I just love how different her sound is.

Can you give us a glimpse into the recording process of your new single ‘Strangers,’ and what you learned from the experience?

I was going through a difficult and unique break up with my ex and so therefore there was a lot of emotions because of that. I had to channel all of that and put it into strangers and that’s how the song came out.

In what ways has working on your upcoming EP ‘Unsent Love Letters Vol.1’ helped define your style and develop as an artist?

As you may know, I’ve been known for releasing a lot of dance tracks and because of that I wanted to step away slightly with this EPN show different side to me as an artist. So I had to really think what do I want to put out there to introduce a new Allegra.

You’ve collaborated with renowned DJs, scoring the top spot on the Music Pop Week Commercial Charts with Tiesto’s remix of ‘Round and Round’. Does ‘Unsent Love Letters Vol.1’ marks a departure from your dance hits and the beginning of a new era?

Definitely, this is slightly a step away from all that – and that’s not me saying that I didn’t enjoy it, I am so lucky to have worked with such incredible DJs around the world. I just wanted to do something independently for me and introduce myself as a different artist. I want my fans to hear something new and different, and this is what I’m trying to do with my EP.

Who were your key musical influences for ‘Unsent Love Letters Vol.1’?

Artists like Griff, Raye, Mimi Webb and Dua Lipa. I’ve been working on this EP now for over a year so there was a lot of influences that I listen to, but these are the artist that I mostly looked up to in terms of creating this EP. I thought it was also important to find my own sound as an artist.

What was the original idea behind the EP?

I wanted each track to be an unsent love letter to an ex where you just want to get all your emotions out, and everything you wish you could say. This is what each song is, and it’s the stages of a break up.

How do you hope ‘Unsent Love Letters Vol.1’ will resonate with listeners?

I just really wanted it to feel like a story. It’s not just tracks being put together to make up an EP. I wanted it to be a storyline with different emotions that you feel through a break up, and I hope my fans will resonate with that.
