Verdant Productions and The Civic Theatre, in association with Dublin Fringe Festival present the world premiere of ‘The Man Who Talks to Statues’ at Civic Theatre from 5 – 11 September.
Tickets are available here.
Written and performed by Shane Casey (who plays Billy Murphy in hit TV series, ‘The Young Offenders’), ‘The Man Who Talks To Statues’ is a contemporary story of a young man lost, reflecting a sense of disconnect and disenfranchisement which is so often present in young men in today’s Irish culture.
Darryl is a recording engineer and voiceover artist who lives in an attic, his own world, creating radio ads, while recording his own play in his spare time. Using techniques pioneered by the CBS Radio series, ‘The Mercury Theatre On The Air’, and other radio programmes popular in the 1930s, the performer will create live ‘Foley’ sound effects on stage and manipulate his voice through unusual microphones, traffic cones and apparently random objects.
Darryl crashes his father’s car, following which he goes on a magic realist road trip to Limerick and Dublin, encountering characters ranging from suspicious locals to deceased celebrities and historical figures. Darryl has a unique capacity for speaking to statues and during the story he interacts with characters such as Richard Harris, Phil Lynott and Molly Malone. Darryl’s road trip includes acts of hedonism, aggression, denial and punch-drunk self-reflection. He is more than a little bit lost and we’re never quite sure what’s real or what’s imagined or, indeed, if it’s salvation or an escape route he’s looking for.
‘The Man Who Talks to Statues’ reunites the creative team of Shane Casey (Writer/Performer), Brian Desmond (Director) and Cormac O’Connor (Sound & Mixed Media Design). The Man Who Talks To Statues was originally a radio play commissioned and broadcast by Newstalk on 19/11/2023. You can listen here.
