Pop has always been a genre of dedications. The shout-out in the bridge, the name stitched into a chorus, the deluxe-edition bonus track written for one person and overheard by millions. What’s new is that you no longer have to be signed, or famous, or dating the artist to get one. For the price of a couple of concert tickets, anyone can now commission a song written about a specific person — their name, their story, the in-jokes only two people share — and have it back, mixed and finished, the same afternoon.
