There’s a moment early in listening to for KING + COUNTRY’s new album ‘the most beautiful colours’ where it becomes clear this isn’t a record chasing a single sound. for KING + COUNTRY have never been a band that stays in one lane for long, but their fifth studio album, pushes that restlessness further than usual, swinging between stadium-sized pop production, worship balladry, and something closer to country storytelling, sometimes within the same song.

Whether that variety reads as ambition or scattershot will likely depend on the listener. What’s undeniable is the intent behind it: Joel and Luke Smallbone have built their career on big, emotionally direct songwriting, and this album doubles down on that instinct rather than second-guessing it.

The most interesting choice on the record isn’t its lead single but its guest list. Rather than reaching for the usual roster of Christian-music collaborators, the brothers pull in names from well outside that world, Jessica Simpson on “my mosaic,” Taylor Hill on “world on fire”, decisions that widen the album’s audience even if they occasionally flatten its sonic identity. “my mosaic” in particular feels like a song built to cross over, its production glossier and more radio-conventional than the duo’s earlier catalog.

Where the album finds its footing most convincingly is in its quieter, more specific moments. “a good man” trades the record’s usual bombast for restraint, and it’s stronger for it, a tribute to the Smallbones’ father that doesn’t need a soaring bridge to land emotionally. “what if I told you?,” featuring the brothers’ wives MŌRIAH and Courtney Smallbone, works similarly: its subject matter, about tuning out other people’s judgment, is common ground for the genre, but the domestic detail behind the collaboration gives it a specificity that generic encouragement anthems usually lack.

“the most beautiful colours” adds up to a fairly convincing statement from a duo more than a decade into a career that shows little sign of slowing, 15 number-one radio hits, four Grammys, and stadium tours across multiple continents. Three additional tracks recorded in Ireland, included on physical and download editions, suggest the brothers are still hunting for new textures rather than resting on what’s already worked.

The record also arrives against a poignant backdrop. Dolly Parton’s death last month has cast new light on the duo’s 2019 team-up on “God Only Knows,” the collaboration that gave for KING + COUNTRY their first-ever entry on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s not something “the most beautiful colours” addresses directly, but for longtime fans, it’s hard not to hear the new album’s themes of gratitude and legacy through that lens.
