The documentary, titled Wham! 10 Days In China<\/em>, is currently showing at cinemas and draws on newly restored video alongside first-person accounts from those who were there. According to The Star<\/a>, Ridgeley, now 63, was motivated by a question that went beyond the duo’s own story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I really wanted to discover, beyond the legacy for Wham! outside of China, which we know of… what actually is the legacy in China,” he says in the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concerts took place in Beijing and Guangzhou, two cities where Western pop music had barely registered before. The documentary uses those stops as anchors for a broader argument about what a single tour can set in motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Blocked US Tour and Simon Napier-Bell’s Calculated Alternative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The mechanics behind the China decision begin with George Michael’s voice. During the 1983 Club Fantastic Tour, it broke down. The anxiety of lasting damage did not leave him quickly. Ridgeley is direct about the consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“His voice had broken down on the (1983) Club Fantastic Tour, that concern was in his mind, the concern that he might do lasting damage. That did, at that point in time, definitely influence his decisions,” he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a planned 90-day US arena run now off the table, manager Simon Napier-Bell needed another move. His answer was China. Ridgeley is equally direct about the origin of that idea: “It was a considered and manufactured career move. It was a consequence of the fact that George was not going to do a 90-day arena tour in the States.” He adds, simply, “Something had to be done and Simon had the answer.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wham!, formed by school friends George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley in 1981, had already achieved global success with hits including “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and “Last Christmas.” The question was where to expand without risking Michael’s voice on a punishing schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China in the 1980s maintained strict controls on Western music. The Beijing concert at the Workers’ Gymnasium drew around 15,000 people, but the audience was tightly policed and the event carried diplomatic weight that extended well beyond the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ridgeley describes what the trip actually demanded. “A show needed to be made of Wham! being there, so that meant official banquets, it meant diplomatic interactions, going to the ambassador’s residence.” There was no casual tourism on the schedule. “We weren’t going to go over there and think that we were going to be sightseeing all day. There was a job to be done.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Media scrutiny was constant. Ridgeley’s summary of how the duo handled it carries a wry precision: “We were decently brought up middle-class lads, so we weren’t going to be really rude to anyone, except the press.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cui Jian, Chinese Rock, and the Tiananmen Anthem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The legacy question Ridgeley posed at the start of the documentary finds its clearest answer in a single audience member. Cui Jian attended the Beijing concert. He would later be labelled the godfather of Chinese rock, and his song “Nothing To My Name” became an anthem for student protesters in Tiananmen Square, four years after Wham! performed in that same city. Cui Jian appears in the documentary himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ridgeley places him at the centre of what the trip ultimately meant. “He embarked on his career as a musician as a consequence of seeing Wham!’s performances, so that’s the meaningful, really enduring legacy.” The chain is precise: a manufactured career move, a policed concert, one person in the crowd whose direction changed, and an anthem that would mark one of the most documented political moments of the late twentieth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ridgeley says as much without qualification. “And that was perhaps the most enduring legacy there is; it is those people whose lives, the course of their lives, let’s say, was changed by Wham!’s performances.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George Michael’s Careless Whisper and What the Footage Preserves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wham! split in 1986. George Michael built a solo career that confirmed what the China concerts had already suggested about his instincts, and died in 2016. The documentary holds footage from those April 1985 shows, and Ridgeley is clear about what it captures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
