Few sounds summon the American frontier as instantly as that lone ocarina cry in\u202fThe Good, the Bad, and the Ugly \u2014 \u201cah-ee-ah-ee-ah,\u201d as it\u2019s lovingly remembered. Yet its mastermind, Italian legend Ennio Morricone, who passed away at 91 in Rome<\/a>, didn\u2019t set foot in the United States until 2007. That\u2019s more than four decades after composing the score that would come to influence various music genres, including our beloved pop sounds.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

But how did a man who never mastered English or wandered through Monument Valley\u2019s red rock buttes or Arizona\u2019s dusty outposts so perfectly channel the lonely, rugged heart of the Southwest?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, Morricone didn\u2019t merely accompany Western filmmakers\u2019 visions; he upended them, carving out a raw, unvarnished soundscape that replaced sweeping orchestral flourishes with what he later described as \u2018the music of reality.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Morricone\u2019s legacy extends much further than the blowing dust and rolling tumbleweeds in his famous Western film scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over a career that totaled around 500 film soundtracks, he moved effortlessly from Sergio Leone\u2019s iconic \u2018Spaghetti Westerns\u2019 to Gillo Pontecorvo\u2019s searing political drama\u202f\u2019The Battle of Algiers\u2019 (1966), and from the eerie tension of Dario Argento\u2019s \u2018The Bird with the Crystal Plumage\u2019 (1970) to the oceanic thrills of Michael Anderson\u2019s \u2018Orca\u2019 (1977). He even contributed the haunting strains in Terrence Malick\u2019s pastoral epic \u2018Days of Heaven\u2019 (1978) and Quentin Tarantino\u2019s snowy chamber piece \u2018The Hateful Eight\u2019 (2015).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, despite his astonishing range, Morricone grew weary of being forever linked to the \u2018Man with No Name\u2019 films. In a cheeky 2006 interview with\u202fThe Guardian, he quipped that \u2018A Fistful of Dollars,\u2019 Clint Eastwood\u2019s screen debut as the laconic antihero, was \u201cthe worst movie Leone made and the worst score I ever wrote<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s easy to get tangled in the \u201cchicken or egg\u201d question with Morricone\u2019s Western themes. Do we instantly hear the American frontier because his music shaped our idea of it? After all, those whistled melodies and staccato guitars have been quoted and spoofed so often that even a Leone novice can pick them out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus, the fact that Morricone\u2019s reach goes far beyond film boosts this case. \u2018Hell Yes\u2019 by Beck lifts those notoriously popular haunting motifs while \u2018Civil War,\u2019 by Guns N\u2019 Roses\u2019 features Morricone\u2019s sparse, echoing guitar lines, known for channeling a tensely charged vibe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it doesn\u2019t stop at music. Online casino game studios have also tapped into Morricone\u2019s Wild West soundscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play\u2019n Go, for instance, sprinkles Morricone-style whistles and guitar licks into Sticky Bandits, while Microgaming leans on eerie harmonica swells for Wild Wild West: The Great Train Heist. Even in the best casino sites<\/a>, those lonely desert notes still cut through, proof that Morricone\u2019s dusty, suspenseful magic is as potent today as it was in film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But again, we could be familiar with Morricone’s sounds just because the Rome-based composer simply tapped into a truer Wild West than his Hollywood peers ever imagined. One not glorified by sweeping strings, but haunted by its own shadowed past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we do know is that Morricone broke away from the typical Western scoring style that treated the frontier like a 19th-century Romantic tableau. That is music that glorifies the lone cowboy\u2019s march into lawless territory. Think more Frontierland pageantry than the gritty, untamed reality of the actual frontier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, Morricone opted for a darker take on the frontier. He dug into its unique soundscape and used his instruments to echo the region\u2019s natural noises, thus painting vivid, almost cinematic scenes through music. In\u202fThe Good, the Bad and the Ugly, for example, he famously replicated a coyote\u2019s call \u201cAie-aye-aaah,\u201d making that lonely howl the film\u2019s central motif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, it\u2019s rather impossible to draw the western genre from Morricone’s sounds. Despite creating these genius works of art being 5,500 miles away from the place he acoustically describes in his film score, there is no denying that he has greatly influenced and reshaped our entire pop-culture soundtrack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
