The Suburbs have been described as having a “Minneapolis sound”, and they’ve had just as much to do with creating such a sound as anyone else. They’ve shown that it’s possible to be both pop and R&B, and be totally free of the restrictions of genre, while being off-the-wall experimental all the while. Their seventh studio album, ‘Poets Party’, follows on swiftly from ‘Hey Muse!’, and latest single, ‘Buckle My Head’, is the perfect example of why The Suburbs have become such a beloved and influential group.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

With a modern sound that is entirely contiguous with what fans have come to love of The Suburbs, ‘Buckle My Head’ reflects their previous classics, such as ‘Love Is The Law’, and ‘Credit In Heaven’, while bringing something new to the table. The funky and tuneful track is sleek, yet fully approachable, and the speckling of horns, observations, and asides, work expertly with the witty turns of phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lyric video for ‘Buckle My Head’, which can be viewed here<\/a>, reinforces the themes and tone of the track, and feels like a distillation of the band’s aesthetic. While giving fans the song’s words, they also show crossed drumsticks, hammering on a red disc resembling and spinning like an old 45, with four black parallel lines that throb, as if the strings on a bass being plucked. Meanwhile, the narrator, resplendent in his suit, captivates with a roaring flame in place of his head. The whole thing is a dizzying kinetic animation; spinning, whirling, and blurring – just like the band themselves, who can never keep still. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
