\u00a0With his Afro-soul style that will you get you up and dancing before you even realise, UK based singer Kobi Mex released his latest single, ‘Wombolombo’, on October 30. The track follows on from his September single, ‘ANNIE<\/strong>‘. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Wombo Lombo’, is one of the most iconic songs of Beninese-French singer, Ang\u00e9lique Kidjo, originally released in 1995 on her ‘Fifa’ album. The song represents African pride to many, and Kobi Mex was inspired to give it his own contemporary twist, and alongside the very talented producer Dami Bone, the pair composed and performed the track during lockdown, basing it around a guitar riff and a Fuji vibe, as opposed to the expected Afrobeats vibe. From there, Kobi worked hard writing to the beat, with the overweening theme being one of nostalgia. Speaking of the track, he said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The lyrics are written to my younger self, as though this is what I would say to myself if I went on a time machine back to my past to counsel me for what’s ahead.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kobi Mex, who lives in London these days but was born in Nigeria to British Nigerian parents, considers that ‘Wombolombo’ is a representation of the African child, and as such serves as the anthem of his own childhood. ‘Wombolombo’ is a beautiful homage to a track which meant so much to so many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kobi Mex started his musical journey as a child, when he sang in a Gospel choir in his church from the age of twelve, but he started his musical career in earnest in 2014. Since then he’s garnered a considerable following, and accolades include performing on Cosy Jam, with Ed Sheeran, where the pair duetted on a cover of ‘Burn’, by Usher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
