Released 10 February, ‘Brand New Shame’ is the latest single form Paul Jacks. The track, from his 4th solo album, ‘Amphibious’, out on Tritone Music, takes a look at the concept of shame from the perspective of someone trying to understand and handle this emotion, and to break its hold over them.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The song comes with a gorgeous video with Claymation by Erin Pollock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’ve written about Paul Jacks many times before, the artist from Anchorage Alaska who brings with him a languid melancholy in his voice, and a dark side that reflects the long nights in which he primarily writes his music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Brand New Shame’ is starkly reflective, and takes a deep dive into Jacks’ mindset. He explains that his worst moments of shame come to him when he is “high on some horse” but he’s coming to grips with it, and perhaps the time has come to “shed his skin”. The drawn out vocals are matched to a dreamy instrumental, comprising guitar, percussion, and synth elements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The music video, crafted in Claymation by Erin Pollock, takes an almost literal interpretation of the lyrics, and shows a person who is covered by seemingly unsurmountable shame and disgust. They come to the realisation that the situation isn’t one without solution, and they “shed their skin”, literally, by way of a magical puddle, revealing their true self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
