Matthew Squires And The Learning Disorders have given us a taste of their upcoming EP, ‘The Electric River’, set for release on 21 October. New single, ‘The Life Of Trees’, is a laid back and catchy track that will have you – as it did us – hitting the replay button immediately the song is finished, and you’ll probably hit it again once it’s through that time too.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

‘The Life Of Trees’ opens with drumbeats and an early 1960s style guitar, and a sense of familiarity that may well just be the product of my own imagination. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘The Life Of Trees’ – to my mind anyway – owes something to Paul Simon, and in fact, Squires even namechecks Simon in ‘The Life Of Trees’, and his vocals even echo Simon’s. The music video, created by John Valley, Sean Robb, and Gianni Sarmiento, focuses on Squires in his house and driving around his neighbourhood where he encounters himself, in fact, two more of himself. It might be introspection, or it might be the acid he talks about taking in the first verse…probably introspection. Squires and his band are based in sub-tropical Austin Texas, and the very town is present in their sound, the product of long, achingly hot summers, and extremely mild winters, giving it a languid, yearning feeling, that quite frankly, I could be doing with right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
