In a more practical sense, a couple of years ago I was rehearsing with some musicians who were playing with Herbie Hancock and I was just having fun and spoofing jazz riffs, thinking \u2018this is really funny\u2019. Then I sort of realised that my voice kind of naturally fell into that area quite easily. And I thought \u2018wow, I never thought I could sing like this\u2019 and so I logged that thought in my mind.<br \/>\n<span id=\"yui_3_0_0-2-1413972224667\" class=\"yui-editorial-embed\"><span id=\"schemaorg\"><span class=\"yom-figure yom-fig-left\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"editorial \" title=\"Copyright [Getty]\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s.yimg.com\/bt\/api\/res\/1.2\/2nJ3U1kS.HWn7HfnELPeXQ--\/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--\/http%3A\/\/l.yimg.com\/os\/publish-images\/omg\/2014-10-21\/efa826a0-5939-11e4-bc0d-0d33ab1ff795_nostalgia.jpg?w=630&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Copyright [Getty]\"  \/><span class=\"legend\">Copyright [Getty]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The majority of the tracks aren\u2019t particularly well known, how did you go about finding them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just started to explore the songs very quietly while I was having some downtime in my life. I was by myself, with my laptop, exploring this wonderful archive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They have such beautiful melodies and such interesting lyrics. I was trying to find songs that I could really interpret well. One approach would have been \u2018OK I\u2019ll find a producer, we\u2019ll hire an orchestra and we\u2019ll go into a big sound studio and record&#8217;. But I just didn\u2019t want to do that. It had no interest to me whatsoever. I wanted to really explore them and really personalise them.<\/p>\n<div id=\"yui_3_9_1_1_1413975305970_820\" class=\"yog-wrap yog-grid yog-24u\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_9_1_1_1413975305970_819\" class=\"yog-col yog-16u yom-primary\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_9_1_1_1413975305970_842\">\n<div id=\"mediablogbody\" class=\"yom-mod yom-art-content \">\n<div id=\"yui_3_9_1_1_1413975305970_841\" class=\"bd\">\n<p id=\"yui_3_9_1_1_1413975305970_860\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>So did this help you decide on the final track listing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat took a while. I think first of all it was about transcribing the songs from simply hearing them. The way I work, I\u2019ll go to the keyboard and I\u2019ll just explore it. To learn a song you have to go over it and over it until it becomes part of you so you can\u2019t just hear and song then sing it. It doesn\u2019t work like that. It\u2019s so personal. So you have to have a process where you\u2019re listening, you\u2019re absorbing and then you start to explore what kind of sounds and structures would work well with it. Where is the core of this song? What is it I\u2019m feeling in it? What can I draw out from it?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s almost like you\u2019re mining for gold, going along this exploratory route and feeling something. Sometimes the songs are so moving that you feel quite emotional. And you should because your job as an interpreter is to feel the emotion and represent it for other people to feel emotional through it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"yui_3_0_0-2-1413972224670\" class=\"yui-editorial-embed\"><span id=\"schemaorg\"><span class=\"yom-figure yom-fig-left\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"editorial \" title=\"Copyright [Rex]\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s2.yimg.com\/bt\/api\/res\/1.2\/vTLr7R88Y75zKarCxAQHiQ--\/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--\/http%3A\/\/l.yimg.com\/os\/publish-images\/omg\/2014-10-21\/bbb79f00-5926-11e4-96d6-97314f1c9a3c_annie-lennox-today-s-music.jpg?w=630&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Copyright [Rex]\"  \/><span class=\"legend\">Copyright [Rex]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n&#8220;I would say that I\u2019ve recognised the feeling element has become quite reductive. It\u2019s come down to a very, very, very hard beat that goes through things and bashes you on the head. It is also hard edged sexualised, which is, OK, I guess, sort of.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But music that is coming out nowadays \u2013 some of it is great, absolutely \u2013 but it\u2019s not music to soothe you, it&#8217;s not music to make you feel introspective in anyway, it is not thought provoking, and it\u2019s not music to make you tender.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In my stage of life I really feel this is why I\u2019ve turned to this nostalgia because I feel like I want music to do that for me. I want music to be a quiet spot where I can just be transported by it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>And how about the industry, what is the biggest change you\u2019ve seen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;It\u2019s interesting because I don\u2019t think you get a lot of that experimentation nowadays. Back then, and I\u2019m talking &#8217;81, the beginning of that decade, there was a freedom to be really radical and people loved it. I think what has happened nowadays music-wise definitely are very quickly formulated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"yui_3_0_0-2-1413972224671\" class=\"yui-editorial-embed\"><span id=\"schemaorg\"><span class=\"yom-figure yom-fig-left\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"editorial \" title=\"Copyright [Rex]\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s.yimg.com\/bt\/api\/res\/1.2\/m.hztX113dAvAuYxe.svTg--\/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--\/http%3A\/\/l.yimg.com\/os\/publish-images\/omg\/2014-10-21\/0dc5ce80-593a-11e4-bc0d-0d33ab1ff795_annie-lennox.jpg?w=630&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Copyright [Rex]\"  \/><span class=\"legend\">Copyright [Rex]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><strong>Why do you think that is?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the reason being is that the music industry is so unsustainable because record companies are looking for something they can be sure of so they have a formula in mind. When they hear something that will fit the formula it matches, it won\u2019t be so risky for them. They won&#8217;t sustain something that is just experimental because for them, they don\u2019t think there is any longevity in it whatsoever, and by longevity, I mean a Nano second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What effect do you think this has on new artists?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;They don\u2019t sustain young artists anymore the way they used to. It\u2019s the law of diminishing returns. It\u2019s the same thing with media, they have information about the ratings of their audience, and so they have to go by those pieces of information meaning that if you try to do something out of the box and innovative and visionary and different that\u2019s going to be a challenge. Because it just might not work. We went from place to place because we were experimental with our sound and style. What is your goal? What is it what you really want to do? Do you want to be a long lasting artist of calibre? What is your aim? Do you just want to be there to be famous? I think the real artists know better than that. I would say that it is very important to keep your grounding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHumility, kindness, and respect go a long way and they are very important qualities to have in life. If you lose sight of those things and you become a really arrogant son of a b***h? I\u2019m sorry but you are going to burnout eventually and people will be glad and they will applaud you in your burnout. They will be glad to see your demise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have you ever bore witness to this first hand?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cYou sometimes see this tremendous arrogance. Breathtakingingly so. The majority of artists truly are wonderful people who haven\u2019t lost touch with where they really are in the big scheme of things. Sometimes I just feel like \u2018you know what? It would be quite interesting to live an incredibly quiet life somewhere,\u2019 which is something I\u2019ve never really done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is it about a quieter life that attracts?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis life that I\u2019ve been living is a very interesting one. Sometimes I feel like I want to be truly anonymous. Just like everyone else. You may say \u2018there is nothing special about being anonymous\u2019 but to me I feel like there is a tremendous value in it, a real beauty in it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong> So would you say that you make a conscious effort to avoid the limelight when possible?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Right now my profile is going to go up because I\u2019m doing interviews, I\u2019m talking about my music, I have a reason to talk. But then there comes a time, and I\u2019ve always been this way, I\u2019ve dipped into this world of publicity but it\u2019s never been about my own private world, it\u2019s about the work I do. Then I steer clear of it for a bit because I feel like it\u2019s a toxic place. And if they feel that way about me, OK, I accept it and it\u2019s kind of flattering.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But it\u2019s also kind of like \u2018ow, I\u2019m not sure I can live up to that expectation.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me? I\u2019m always a human being and I\u2019m nothing. I\u2019m nothing! That\u2019s where I come from and that\u2019s where I\u2019m going, the same for all of us \u2013 that\u2019s the great equaliser.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>So when did you first come to realise this?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cWhen I had children, it was the most incredibly transformative thing to experience. To have my children and to bring them up and to care for them and to love them, and to see how lucky am I to have health care for my kids. We have access to the great things in life that billions of mothers, girls, and boys haven\u2019t got the possibility of getting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very humbling when you have the chance to see
