We love AJ Smith here at Essentially Pop! His single, ‘Nobody’, which we wrote about back in April, came with a gorgeously appointed music video that evoked a Bridgerton vibe. Now he returns with the nihilistic-sounding, ‘We’re All Gonna Die’, itself with its own striking clip.

AJ Smith’s sound is somewhat nostalgia-inducing, yet it is quite solidly attached to the current age with the use of modern musical processes. ‘We’re All Gonna Die’, with Smith’s booming vocals and tight songwriting reminds us somewhat of Green Day, Panic! At The Disco, My Chemical Romance, and The Killers. It’s a pop-punk track with an incredibly catchy refrain that will echo through your brain long after you’ve hit that stop button.

As I write this, here in the UK we’ve just yesterday learned of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, someone whom the vast majority of the world’s population would probably have reckoned was somehow immortal. But AJ Smith’s new single, ‘We’re All Gonna Die’, with its stark assurances that none of us are immune to the fragility of these human forms, is quite comforting; lyrics such as “we’re all gonna die, we just don’t know when, let’s make the most of our time that we’ve got left” are delivered with passion, and the instrumentals are delivered with power. If I listen to the track through headphones I can hear birds, tv chatter, and whistling – let us know what you’ve managed to pick out from the track.

The music video for ‘We’re All Gonna Die’ serves as the perfect companion to Smith’s lyrics, as they elevate the song’s theme: quick cuts of footage show Smith being pulled into a virtual world where he battles with foes both fictional and real life – it’s an interesting concept with regard to what we’ve all been experiencing the past few years during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
