Nya knows something about finding out ‘The Real You’. Not only is it the name of her latest single, and music video, but she’s also got personal experience of it. Not too long ago she was studying global public health at New York University. She had a great – and stable – career ahead of her, yet despite all that, all she wanted to do was write songs and sing. She took a leap of faith and found her place in the sun, now working full time as a musical artist. <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

‘The Real You’ is the perfect example of why Nya made the right choice. Fast rising on the Mediabase and Billboard Adult Contemporary charts, it’s so far reached the 20th and 26th spots respectively. Additionally, ‘The Real You’ peaked at number 4 on the Digital Radio Tracker Top Independent Airplay chart, and has remained part of the top 10 for a number of consecutive weeks.

‘The Real You’ opens with a music box melody, perhaps giving the impression that life can be a fairytale. The song quickly reveals itself to be quite the opposite, as it becomes a piano ballad, pulling apart the memories of a past relationship, where the other person’s performance was a shadow of who they truly were. It became clear that they weren’t at all the person Nya thought they were. Singing,, “The real you had to go spoil all that we had. I don’t like the real you,” she discovers, in hindsight, that it’s better to break ties with a person, because it’s impossible for them to live up to their lie on the long term.

The music video for ‘The Real You’ was shot in black and white, giving it an intimate quality. Using a recurring time-lapse of a wilted rose, we are shown a symbol of the relationship dying as time continues. The rose was on fire, demonstrating the burning love and its spark; and later the fire, and the relationship, has died down. ‘The Real You’ serves as a catharsis for Nya, showing how her healing is ongoing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
