‘Before You Were Born’ is the new single from Ekotumi. Ethereal with a sense of magic, the song, set for release on July 2, takes inspiration from the Japanese mythology of the artist’s homeland. You can pre-save ‘Before You Were Born’ here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the song might sound a bit unusual to ears used to Western pop songs, it’s easy to lose yourself in the delicate vocals and spacious sound textures as Ekotumi expresses the connection of humanity with the Gods and Goddesses of Japanese tradition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The song, which comes with a music video showing Ekotumi at one with nature in the rich and verdant woodlands of Japan, is an experimental track which will nonetheless resonate with listeners no matter what their background. We were reminded of the music of Ryuchi Sakamoto, another Japanese musician who incorporates traditional rhythms and instruments into his sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Singer-songwriter, dancer, performer and artist, Ekotumi started her musical career while still at university, when she was featured singing in a movie’s soundtrack. Since that time she’s performed all over the world, her music resonating with those versed in the mythology of other countries; indeed even her stage name, ‘Ekotumi’, comes from both Japanese and Greek mythology, combining the concept of ‘Echo’ in Greek myths, and the Japanese word for Honey, a direct reference to the singer’s mellifluous vocals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
