{"id":7487,"date":"2014-01-27T12:25:11","date_gmt":"2014-01-27T12:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/195.21.21.161\/epop\/?p=7487"},"modified":"2026-09-14T07:46:07","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T06:46:07","slug":"grammys-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essentiallypop.com\/epop\/2014\/01\/grammys-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Roundup of the Grammys 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It was the biggest night of the year for the recording industry when the <a title=\"National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Academy_of_Recording_Arts_and_Sciences\">National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences<\/a> awarded their 56th Annual Grammy Awards.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year&#8217;s awards recognised the quirky and the unusual, with French robot dance act Daft Punk winning five, including Album of the Year (&#8216;Random Access Memories&#8217;), and Record of the Year (&#8216;Get Lucky&#8217;), and New Zealand teenager Lorde took away the awards Song of the Year (&#8216;Royals&#8217;) and Best Pop Solo Performance, also for &#8216;Royals&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surely the most controversial winners of the night however were Rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis, who found fame after self-releasing their album &#8216;The Heist&#8217;, and were nominated in seven categories. The pair were awarded the prizes for Best Rap Song (&#8216;Thrift Shop&#8217;), Best Rap Performance (&#8216;Thrift Shop&#8217;) Best Rap Album (&#8216;The Heist&#8217;), and Best New Artist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They went on to perform their song, &#8216;Same Love&#8217;, with Queen Latifah officiating over the weddings of 34 couples at the ceremony, leaving not a dry eye in the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As she (Queen Latifah) pronounced them legally married, Madonna hit the stage wearing a white cowboy hat and started singing a slowed-down version of her 1986 single &#8220;Open Your Heart.&#8221; A choir backed her, the newly married couples were shown singing along in tears and Macklemore\u2019s vision of literally uniting people was fully realized on a massive, world stage.&#8221; &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/news\/macklemore-queen-latifah-turn-same-love-into-mass-grammy-wedding-20140126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s not the controversial part.
