Head Fake return with their new self-titled EP, a collaboration with London-based Deep House / Dub artists, Dub Fu Masters. The three track record is a fun concept and which combines the anonymous trio’s signature retro 80s sound with a modern pop / dance vibe.

Opening with the track, ‘One Step’, a lyrically sparse synth based song, you are immediately cast into a world of head bopping electronica, that will certainly appeal to fans of New Order, or Kraftwerk.

The second tune on the EP, ‘Trump Funk’, could also be a freshly found track from the 80s, if it weren’t for the contemporary title. Starting with a fun synth, they soon bring in xylophone, and electric bass guitar sounds, and again, guarantee you’ll be up and dancing, or at least nodding along in your chair while you’re trying to type (guilty as charged). I really like the addition of the repeated “bom bom bom bom” vocal refrain; at about the 2/3 spot in the track it starts trailing off, adding a whole new level to the sound. FINALLY in the final minute of the 6 minute track, we have some lyrics, again a repeated refrain, about Trump. So so so good.

‘Overjoyed’, the final track on the EP, feels like a track you could run to – indeed, all three are perfect for listening to via headphones while exercising; there’s enough upbeat rhythms to get not just your blood pumping but also your fists thumping. The only track on the EP with what could be called real lyrics, a synthesised voice, with a vaguely sinister feel, informs us that they feel overjoyed. But that’s part of the appeal; we are pulled in by the idea of a robot on its way to becoming fully human – they’re experiencing emotions for the first time, including happiness.
