It’s crazy to think we’re talking about albums set for release in October, but suddenly it’s August already, so here we are. Darren Jessee is probably best known for being the co-founder and drummer of Ben Folds Five, but he’s a solo performer as well, and his latest album, ‘Remover’, the follow up to 2018’s ‘The Jane, Room 217’, is set for release on October 16, through Bar\/None Records. ‘Cape Elizabeth’, from the forthcoming album, came out on 31 July.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Starting out simply accompanied by his acoustic guitar, Jessee’s vocals are poignant and tinged with a sadness which may well come from the instrumental. Later the track soars into an anthemic carillon of strings, with the guitar keeping the beat throughout. The listener is taken along for the ride, rising and falling with the sound of the music.<\/p>\n

‘Cape Elizabeth’ is accompanied by a lyric video, shot simply in black and white, which appears to be much more prosaic than the song itself – not a bad thing, as it doesn’t distract, and does what a music video is supposed to do – to draw focus to the song.<\/p>\n

In fact, Jessee paints a picture with his lyrics, so much so that the video isn’t really necessary. Cape Elizabeth, a leafy town just outside Portland, Maine, can be felt in his words, the sea, sand, and stars; the cold waters; the cove where the bells sound: Jessee creates the perfect word picture, demonstrating fully his talent as a wordsmith, and leaving the listener eager for more.<\/p>\n
