Although he’s originally from Wolverhampton, UK, David Newton is these days based in LA, more specifically Burbank, where he turned his garage into a recording studio, and has produced and engineered albums for the likes of The Little Ones, The Soft Pack, The Henry Clay People, The Blood Arm, and The Happy Hollows, among many many others.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

When he’s not producing for others, he’s making his own music, and was the guitarist and songwriter for The Mighty Lemon Drops, and also did a brief stint with The Blue Aeroplanes.<\/p>\n

Dave released his debut solo effort in 2011, the acclaimed ‘Paint The Town’ EP, his first under the name David Newton & Thee Mighty Angels, and zooming forward to today, he’s released a new track, ‘The Songs That Changed Our Lives’, the precursor to his upcoming long player, ‘A Gateway To A Lifetime Of Disappointment’, set to come out August 14 (how are we nearly in August already?).<\/p>\n

‘The Songs That Changed Our Lives’ starts out sounding like it’s going to be something from The Byrds, The Flying Pickets, even The Housemartins – you get all prepped up for a close-harmonied, 60s style\/Northern Soul type sound, and instead, it’s a half sung, half spoken word track. There’s a lot of humour in it, featuring lead vocals by David’s old friend, Eddie Argos, of Art Brut, with whom he toured on and off during the 2000s. The song is essentially a catalogue of Eddie and Dave’s favourite records, and the music video which accompanies it includes the very same, much loved and well-played 7 inches. You still get the close harmonies, but they’re relegated to the backing vocals, adding a nice layer to the already pleasant music. In a lot of ways it’s an updated version of UK 80s post-punk; uplifting and fun, calling to mind Ian Drury, or a less reggae\/2-tone version of Bad Manners.<\/p>\n

‘A Gateway To A Lifetime Of Disappointment’, coming out on August 14, will comprise 10 songs which chronicle the joys and disappointments of what life has in store for us. If ‘The Songs That Changed Our Lives’ is any indication, it’s bound to be a fun record.<\/p>\n
